San Diego Marijuana

San Diego cannabis law

How much cannabis can you buy in San Diego?

Adults 21 and older may buy up to 28.5 grams of cannabis flower or 8 grams of concentrated cannabis per day, with valid government-issued photo identification. The limit applies to the person rather than the storefront, so visiting several shops in one day does not increase it.

The limits

CategoryAdult-use limit, per day
Cannabis flower28.5 grams (about one ounce)
Concentrated cannabis8 grams
Manufactured products, including ediblesCounted as concentrated cannabis, by cannabis content
Home cultivationUp to six plants per residence, subject to local rules
A brass balance scale and sealed jars on a wooden counter
Two separate ceilings — flower and concentrate — measured per person, per day.

What actually counts

The two limits are separate ceilings rather than a single combined allowance. You may purchase up to the flower limit and up to the concentrate limit on the same day. Manufactured products such as edibles, vape cartridges, and tinctures are measured by their cannabis content, not by the total weight of the packaged product, which is why a large box of edibles can still sit well inside the limit.

The limit follows you, not the receipt

This is a personal limit. Storefronts track their own sales, but the rule constrains what you may buy and possess, so purchasing at multiple locations in a day does not lawfully increase your total.

Medical patients

California maintains a separate medical framework with different possession allowances for qualified patients and primary caregivers holding valid documentation. If you hold a state medical identification card, the amounts and the tax treatment can both differ from the adult-use rules described above. Bring your documentation to the storefront.

Identification

Every licensed storefront checks identification at entry. You need a valid government-issued photo identification showing you are 21 or older. Out-of-state driving licences and foreign passports are normally accepted for adult-use purchases, which matters for the large share of San Diego buyers who are visitors. There is more detail on the practical side of a first visit in our first-time buyer guide.

Where the limits stop helping you

Staying inside the purchase limit does not make consumption lawful anywhere, and it does not help at a border crossing or on a military installation. Those are separate questions with separate and much harsher answers:
