How much cannabis can you buy in San Diego?
For adult-use customers 21 and older, California retailers may sell up to 28.5 grams of flower and 8 grams of concentrate in a day. Edibles count toward the concentrate limit by cannabis content. Separate possession limits still apply; shopping at more than one store does not increase what you may possess.

What actually counts
The two limits are separate ceilings rather than a single combined allowance. You may purchase up to the flower limit and up to the concentrate limit on the same day. Manufactured products such as edibles, vape cartridges, and tinctures are measured by their cannabis content, not by the total weight of the packaged product, which is why a large box of edibles can still sit well inside the limit.
The limit follows you, not the receipt
Daily sales limits govern what a retailer may sell to each adult-use customer. California’s separate possession limits apply to the person, so shopping at multiple stores does not increase the amount you may lawfully possess.
Medical patients
California maintains a separate medical framework with different possession allowances for qualified patients and primary caregivers holding valid documentation. If you hold a state medical identification card, the amounts and the tax treatment can both differ from the adult-use rules described above. Bring your documentation to the storefront.
Identification
Every licensed storefront checks identification at entry. You need a valid government-issued photo identification showing you are 21 or older. Out-of-state driving licenses and foreign passports are normally accepted for adult-use purchases, which matters for the large share of San Diego buyers who are visitors. Where the limits stop helping you
Staying inside the purchase limit does not make consumption lawful anywhere, and it does not help at a border crossing or on a military installation. Those are separate questions with separate and much harsher answers:
- Where you can legally consume — the list is shorter than most visitors expect.
- Cannabis and the Tijuana border — a federal offense in both directions.
- Military service members — prohibited regardless of state law.
